Resolutions.

Melbourne City, New Years Eve 2011
Frankly, I’m not a big believer in making new year resolutions.
We make them, we break them (if you’re lucky, you’ll keep at them for at least the first ten days of the new year. Then you break them). Believe me, I’ve made my fair share of new year resolutions, heck, I’ve even made quarter year resolutions, mid year resolutions, almost end of the year resolutions, resolutions for exam periods, resolutions for summer break. You name it, I’ve made it.
We do not need a new year to make a change. Change can come any season, any day, any time. It only takes you making a decision, & sticking by that decision come rain or shine.
A new year can symbolise a new brand new start, leaving behind the year that was. Good or bad. Especially bad. So yes, new years can be new starts, but any time can be a new start. It can be done: waking up one day and deciding that from that day on, thing’s will be different. You do not need a new year for that.
So, I haven’t been making new year resolutions for quite some time now. I simply make decisions throughout the course of the year. Change, one bit at a time. A full list can at times, overwhelm. Trust me, if I were to make a list, I could write down a million and one things I’d love to change, or not change. And honestly, I’d chicken out even before I begin to do anything about them.
Anyways, here’s a helpful hint for those of you who were going to take this new year as a new start. And wanted to make a list of decisions you will live by for the rest of this year. Make smaller achievable goals. For example: instead of writing I’ll lose (insert ridiculous number here) of kilos by the end of this year, write down something like: I will make better, healthier choices everyday. Or instead of writing down I will be a happier person, write down: I will start smiling more or I will compliment at least one person a day.
I noticed that by making these conscious decisions daily, it simply becomes a way of life. And by the end of it, you’ll realise how far you’ve come.
So, good luck and I hope this new year brings you the change you want to see in your life. Happy New Year, everyone! x
